The Imo State Police Command has dismissed as false a viral report alleging that suspected herdsmen attacked and set a student hostel ablaze in Nekede, Owerri.
The clarification was made on Sunday by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Henry Okoye, following the circulation of the claim on social media, particularly Facebook.
The viral report had alleged that over 80 students were trapped in a hostel near the Federal Polytechnic Nekede after it was allegedly set on fire by suspected herdsmen.
However, the police described the report as entirely false, misleading, and capable of inciting unnecessary panic among residents.
In an official statement, the command urged the public to disregard the information and refrain from spreading unverified content that could lead to fear, panic, or public disorder.
