Cape Verde have secured a historic place in the knockout stage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after holding Saudi Arabia to a goalless draw in their final Group H match.
The result, combined with Spain’s 1-0 victory over Uruguay, saw the tournament debutants finish second in the group with three points, earning a Round of 32 clash against defending champions Argentina on July 3 in Miami.
Despite drawing all three of their group matches, Cape Verde advanced thanks to their resilient performances. Ranked 67th in the world and representing a nation of just over 500,000 people, the African side has become one of the tournament’s biggest surprise packages.
Scenes of celebration erupted after the final whistle as players and fans waited anxiously for confirmation of Spain’s victory before celebrating their qualification. Midfielder Deroy Duarte described the achievement as “a dream,” while head coach Bubista praised his team’s determination and belief.

“We always believed we could reach this stage,” the coach said. “We are a small country, but we fight for what we want. Nothing is impossible.”
Cape Verde’s impressive campaign began with a scoreless draw against Spain, followed by a 2-2 draw with Uruguay before the decisive stalemate against Saudi Arabia.
Goalkeeper Vozinha once again played a crucial role, producing key saves throughout the tournament, while the team created several scoring opportunities against Saudi Arabia but failed to convert them.
Saudi Arabia also had chances but struggled to break down Cape Verde’s disciplined defence. Defender Hassan Al-Tambakti was forced off with an injury during the first half, while goalkeeper Mohammed Al-Owais made an important late save to keep the match level.
Cape Verde will now face Lionel Messi-led Argentina in what promises to be one of the most anticipated Round of 32 fixtures, while Group H winners Spain will meet the runners-up from Group J.
