
The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Apapa Area Command, has intercepted expired pharmaceutical products valued at over ₦12.7 billion and seized 1.8 tonnes of cannabis in a series of intelligence-driven operations.
In a statement issued by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, Chief Superintendent of Customs Isah Sulaiman, the seizures were carried out in collaboration with the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) and other regulatory bodies.
According to the statement, two 40-foot containers loaded with expired drugs were intercepted. The products were allegedly meant for illegal relabelling and reintroduction into the Nigerian market, posing serious risks to public health and the economy.
In a separate operation, Customs officers discovered a 40-foot container containing cannabis, commonly known as “Canadian loud.”
The illicit drugs, weighing approximately 1,819 kilogrammes, were concealed in vehicles, including a Toyota Sienna, as well as in bags and drums within the container.

A total of 3,639 sachets of the substance, each weighing 500 grammes, were recovered, with preliminary tests confirming it as cannabis.
Reacting to the development, the Comptroller of the Apapa Command, Emmanuel Oshoba, warned smugglers and illegal importers to desist from such activities, describing them as threats to national development and public safety.
He stressed that the Command has the intelligence, technology, and capacity to track and apprehend offenders, adding that enforcement operations will remain strict and intelligence-led while ensuring legitimate trade is not disrupted.
The seizures underscore ongoing efforts by security agencies to combat drug trafficking and prevent harmful products from entering the Nigerian market.
