Women from Elugwu Akwu community in Oji River Local Government Area of Enugu State staged a protest on June 17, 2026, calling for an end to prostitution and related activities in their area.
The protesters, dressed in colorful traditional attire, marched along a wet rural road carrying banners with the inscription “End Ashawo / End New heaven / End Nkpuru Mmiri Protest by Elugwu Akwu Women.”
Videos of the demonstration circulated widely on Facebook and Instagram, showing dozens of women chanting and marching in unison.
The women accused sex workers of taking over their husbands and sons and said the protest was aimed at stopping prostitution, “New heaven,” and “Nkpuru Mmiri” in the community. The footage was Sen Chijinkem Ugwuanyi and Oji River TV

Online reactions were mixed. While some users treated the protest as a meme, others debated whether the action addressed real issues affecting the community.
The protest comes amid broader efforts by Enugu police to crack down on human trafficking and prostitution syndicates in the state.
In January 2026, police rescued a 20-year-old woman trafficked for prostitution after she was taken to a shrine in Amorji-Nike, Enugu.
