The Kogi State Police Command has commenced a full-scale investigation into a recent wave of reprisal killings that left at least five people dead in Abugi and surrounding communities.
According to a statement released by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Afusat Salisu, calm has been restored in the affected areas following swift intervention by security operatives and community stakeholders.
The violence reportedly erupted after the killing of a herder in the community last Thursday, triggering retaliatory attacks that claimed multiple lives.
Salisu explained that the Area Command in Lokoja, working alongside traditional rulers and community leaders, held strategic meetings aimed at restoring peace, promoting reconciliation, and addressing the root causes of the conflict.
“The command has initiated a comprehensive investigation through the State Criminal Investigation Department. Efforts are ongoing to identify, track, and apprehend all individuals involved in the killings,” she stated.

She added that security personnel have been strategically deployed across the affected communities to prevent further violence and ensure the safety of residents.
While confirming that normalcy has returned, the police emphasized that investigations remain active and that all perpetrators will be brought to justice.
Reacting to the incident, the Commissioner of Police, Naziru Kankarofi, reiterated the command’s commitment to protecting lives and property across the state.
He urged residents to remain law-abiding and report any suspicious activities to security agencies promptly.
Authorities assured the public that proactive measures are in place to sustain peace and prevent a recurrence of such tragic incidents.
