A mobile phone battery explosion has triggered a fire outbreak at Tecno Complex, Mokola Roundabout, Ibadan, the Oyo State capital. The Oyo State Fire Services Agency said the incident occurred on Monday, June 8, 2026, at about 8:15 pm and was successfully contained before it spread to other shops.
According to a statement issued on Tuesday by the Chairman of the agency, Moroof Akinwande, firefighters led by ACFS Amoo were deployed to the scene after a distress call from Mr Oluyomade Adepeju. Upon arrival, they discovered that the second shop on the upper floor of the commercial building was engulfed in flames with thick smoke billowing from the premises.

Akinwande said the firefighters swiftly extinguished the fire and prevented it from spreading to adjoining shops and nearby properties. Preliminary investigation showed that the explosion of a mobile phone battery ignited nearby combustible materials and caused the fire. No casualty was recorded during the incident. The firefighting appliance returned safely to the station at 10:58 pm and resumed operational standby.
The Fire Services Chairman commended officers of the Nigerian Police Force, Mokola Divisional Headquarters, for providing security coverage throughout the operation. He urged members of the public to observe strict safety precautions while using electrical and electronic appliances to prevent explosions that could lead to fire disasters. Akinwande also stressed the need for all commercial buildings to install fire extinguishers for quick response to fire outbreaks at the early stage.
