There is growing concern in Enugu State following the circulation of a viral social media post warning of a possible terrorist attack and mass abduction of students at the main campus of the University of Nigeria Nsukka.
The alarming message, which surfaced online under the name “Anonymous Syndicate,” claimed that armed jihadist elements had infiltrated the Nsukka community disguised as commercial motorcyclists to scout vulnerable points around the institution.
The post further alleged that the university was being mapped for a coordinated attack, sparking fear and widespread discussion among residents and students.
According to the viral statement, the supposed attackers were said to be identifying access routes into the campus and monitoring key locations around the university environment.
The message, widely shared on Facebook, urged the public and authorities to act swiftly, warning of an imminent threat.
The development triggered anxiety within Nsukka and surrounding communities, with reports indicating that some religious groups held special prayer sessions over the weekend, seeking divine protection for the institution and its students.
However, the management of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka has dismissed the viral claims, stating that there is no verified intelligence or credible security report supporting the allegation of an impending attack.

The institution stressed that the circulating message is unsubstantiated and should be disregarded to prevent unnecessary panic.
Nonetheless, university authorities confirmed that precautionary measures have been strengthened to ensure continued safety on campus.
These measures reportedly include the deployment of security personnel from the Nigerian Police Force and the Nigerian Army at strategic entry points, working alongside the university’s internal security unit.
Some access gates have also been temporarily restricted to improve monitoring and control of movement within the campus.
In addition, the management announced a temporary suspension of motorcycle operations within the university premises, directing riders to park outside designated areas before entering the campus on foot.
Authorities said the decision was taken strictly as a preventive security step.
University spokesperson Inya Agha Egwu urged students, staff, and residents to remain calm, go about their normal activities, and avoid sharing unverified information capable of causing fear or disruption.
He further emphasized that while there is no confirmed threat, members of the university community should remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to security agencies, reinforcing that security remains a shared responsibility.
Authorities reiterated their commitment to maintaining a safe academic environment and cautioned against the spread of panic-inducing messages on social media without verification.
