José Mourinho’s expected return to Real Madrid has been put on hold due to the club’s ongoing presidential elections.
The Benfica manager was set to be unveiled as Madrid’s new boss today, with plans for the announcement already finalized. According to Portuguese outlet Record, the unveiling was delayed after Florentino Pérez faced unexpected opposition in the race for the presidency.
Everything had been prepared for Mourinho’s presentation, but Pérez’s re-election is no longer certain. His challenger, Enrique Riquelme, has opened his campaign headquarters directly opposite the Bernabéu, signaling a serious bid to unseat the incumbent.

Had Riquelme not entered the race, Pérez would likely have secured another term on Sunday, paving the way for Mourinho’s appointment within 24 hours. Instead, the Portuguese coach flew back to Lisbon and will now wait until June 7, when the election results are expected.
If Pérez fails to retain his position, Mourinho’s future at Real Madrid remains uncertain. It is unclear whether the new leadership would move forward with the deal or pursue a different direction for the managerial role.
