The Lagos State Government has announced a ban on carrying goods and heavy luggage on all regulated public transport buses operating in the state.
The directive, issued by the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA), will take effect from June 1, 2026. According to LAMATA’s Head of Corporate Communication, Kolawole Ojelabi, the decision followed rising complaints and operational issues linked to passengers using regulated buses to transport bulky items.
The authority said the practice had been affecting passenger comfort, safety, and the overall efficiency of bus services. The ban was agreed upon during a meeting with bus operators, where stakeholders resolved to end the practice to improve service delivery.

LAMATA warned that enforcement would be strict. Any driver caught transporting goods during the enforcement period faces immediate dismissal and blacklisting. The agency added that terminal and ground staff, including LAMATA personnel, found assisting or allowing goods to be loaded onto regulated buses would also be summarily removed from service.
The agency stressed there would be zero tolerance for non-compliance and urged commuters, operators, and terminal officials to make alternative arrangements for moving goods.
LAMATA reaffirmed its commitment to restoring order, safety, and efficiency in Lagos’ public transport system.
