Chelsea and England goalkeeper Hannah Hampton has raised concerns over what she describes as unfair media treatment of women goalkeepers, noting that excessive focus on mistakes often overshadows their achievements.
Speaking after securing her second consecutive Women’s Super League (WSL) Golden Glove award, Hampton expressed frustration that errors by female goalkeepers are frequently amplified, while outstanding performances receive far less recognition.
According to reports, the 25-year-old shot-stopper emphasized that the imbalance in coverage can negatively affect players’ reputations and slow the progress of women’s football.
“Goalkeepers in the women’s game are always under scrutiny, but when we perform well, there isn’t enough celebration or acknowledgement,” she said.
“The media has a powerful influence, and constantly highlighting mistakes only damages the image of women’s goalkeeping.”
Hampton, who played a key role in England’s UEFA Women’s Euro 2025 triumph delivering crucial saves in the penalty shootout was also named the world’s best female goalkeeper at the Ballon d’Or ceremony.

Despite her recent success, she noted that media narratives often fail to reflect the growth, quality, and professionalism within the women’s game.
She called for a shift in perspective, urging stakeholders and media outlets to promote positivity and support the development of women’s football.
“Why bring players down when we’re trying to elevate the game? We need to champion each other’s successes,” she added.
Reflecting on her career, Hampton acknowledged past challenges, including her temporary exclusion from the England squad in 2022 due to off-field concerns.
She later returned to the team in 2023 after resolving those issues, though she admitted the criticism during that period was difficult and nearly pushed her to consider quitting football.
Hampton also highlighted the unique pressures faced by goalkeepers, stressing that the demands of the position are best understood by those who play it.
She concluded by praising fellow goalkeeper Sophie Whitehouse for her impressive performances this season, stating that emerging talents deserve greater recognition as the women’s game continues to grow.
