
The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has ordered the dismissal and prosecution of officers involved in the fatal shooting of a 28-year-old man, Mene Ogidi, in Effurun, Delta State.
The incident, which occurred on April 26, 2026, involved operatives attached to the Effurun Area Command who reportedly acted on intelligence provided by members of the public.
The victim was said to have been arrested while attempting to send a parcel suspected to contain a Beretta pistol with four rounds of ammunition.
Following the shooting, the Nigeria Police Force initiated an internal investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident. In a statement issued by the Force Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, all officers connected to the case were withdrawn from Delta State and redeployed to Abuja, where they underwent expedited disciplinary procedures.
The findings of the investigation revealed that the principal officer, ASP Nuhu Usman, acted in violation of Force Order 237 and other regulations guiding the use of firearms.

The police described his actions as unlawful, unprofessional, and a breach of his duty to protect life.
Based on the outcome, the police authorities approved the immediate dismissal of Usman and other officers found culpable.
The recommendation has been forwarded to the Police Service Commission for ratification, after which the affected officers will be handed over to the appropriate judicial authorities for prosecution.
Reaffirming its stance, the police stated that no officer has the right to take a life outside the provisions of the law, warning that any personnel found guilty of such misconduct will face strict disciplinary and legal consequences.
Meanwhile, the spokesperson for the Delta State Police Command, Bright Edafe, disclosed that the principal suspect is expected to face murder charges.
He emphasized that every suspect has a right to life and due process, adding that there was no justification for the shooting.
The incident has sparked widespread outrage across social media, raising renewed concerns about police brutality and accountability in Nigeria.
The police also extended condolences to the family of the deceased, assuring that the case will be handled with transparency and that justice will be served.
