Bruno Fernandez
Former Paul Pogba has claimed that Bruno Fernandes would be firmly in contention for the Ballon d’Or if he played for a more dominant team like Manchester City.
Speaking on the Rio Ferdinand Presents podcast, the AS Monaco midfielder praised Fernandes’ exceptional quality but suggested that team success plays a major role in individual recognition.
According to Pogba, Fernandes already performs at a world-class level but lacks the collective achievements that often elevate players into global award conversations.
“Put him in a team like City, and he’s in the Ballon d’Or discussion,” Pogba said, emphasizing how success at the highest level influences perception.

Fernandes has been one of the standout performers for Manchester United this season, registering 18 Premier League assists and edging closer to the single-season assist record jointly held by Thierry Henry and Kevin De Bruyne.
Beyond his creativity, the Portuguese midfielder has also contributed crucial goals and leadership, including a decisive assist in a recent victory over Chelsea FC.
Despite his impressive individual numbers, Pogba noted that major individual honours like the Ballon d’Or are often tied to team trophies and consistent dominance.
“When you don’t win, people don’t look at you the same way,” he added.
Since joining Manchester United from Sporting CP in 2020, Fernandes has made over 300 appearances and scored more than 100 goals, cementing his status as a key figure at Old Trafford.
Pogba’s remarks have reignited the ongoing debate about whether individual brilliance alone is enough or if team success remains the defining factor in football’s biggest individual award.
