The Engineering Institution of Tanzania (EIT) officially kicked off the 12th UNESCO Africa Engineering Week (AEW) and the 10th African Engineering Conference (AEC) this evening with a vibrant welcome reception held at the Southern Sun Hotel.
The outdoor cocktail event served as a high-level networking precursor to the main conference, which is scheduled to take place from September 14th to 18th, 2026, at the Julius Nyerere International Conference Centre (JNICC).
The evening brought together the “who’s who” of the global and continental engineering community. Among the prominent attendees was the Nigerian delegation, led by the President of the Nigerian Society of Engineers, Engr. Ali Alimasuya Rabiu, FNSE, F.ASCE, FAEng, MFR. His presence underscored the strong collaborative ties between West African engineering bodies and their counterparts across the continent.

The reception also saw the attendance of esteemed global leaders, including the President of the World Federation of Engineering Organisations (WFEO), Eng. Seng Chuan Tan and the President of the Federation of African Engineering Organisations (FAEO), Eng. Refilwe Buthelezi. They were joined by senior UNESCO officials and delegates representing over 25 countries across Africa, Europe, and Asia, highlighting the international significance of this year’s summit.
In his welcome remarks, the President of the EIT, Eng. Asa Mwaipopo, FEIT expressed their pride in hosting such a diverse assembly of professionals dedicated to advancing engineering excellence for sustainable development in Africa. The atmosphere at the Southern Sun was one of camaraderie and shared purpose, as delegates exchanged ideas ahead of the technical sessions beginning tomorrow.
The upcoming five-day conference at the JNICC is expected to focus on critical infrastructure, innovation, and the role of engineering in achieving the African Union’s Agenda 2063. With the theme – “Engineering Africa’s Inclusive, Innovative and Sustainable Future” , the conference promises to be a landmark gathering for the profession on the continent.
