Declan Rice
Arsenal is facing growing concerns over their midfield fitness ahead of their UEFA Champions League quarter-final second-leg clash against Sporting Lisbon.
Manager Mikel Arteta has revealed that Declan Rice missed training due to load management rather than a serious injury, easing initial fears among fans.
The England international was absent from Arsenal’s open training session at London Colney, raising questions about his availability for the decisive encounter.
Rice, who captained the side in their recent 2-1 Premier League defeat to Bournemouth, has been one of Arsenal’s most relied-upon players this season.
The former West Ham United midfielder has made 46 appearances across all competitions, contributing five goals and 11 assists while logging over 3,600 minutes on the pitch.
Speaking ahead of the match, Arteta suggested the decision to rest Rice was precautionary.
“We have to wait until tomorrow morning to assess a few players and make the right decision,” Arteta said. “He’s played a lot of games, and that’s part of the issue, but he’s doing everything he can to be available.”

Rice was not the only notable absentee. Martin Ødegaard, Bukayo Saka, Riccardo Calafiori, and Jurrien Timber were also missing from training, further deepening concerns over squad fitness.
Saka, who has not featured since the international break, is reportedly recovering from an Achilles issue. Arteta, however, remains optimistic about his return.
“There is progression. It should hopefully be a matter of days, not weeks,” he added.
Timber is also edging closer to a comeback, though no definitive timeline has been confirmed.
With Mikel Merino still sidelined following foot surgery, Arsenal could be left short of options in midfield.
Additionally, Martin Zubimendi despite training has shown signs of fatigue after a difficult outing against Bournemouth.
As the Gunners prepare for a crucial European night, Arteta may be forced to make key decisions with several of his midfield stars not at full fitness.
