Kai Havertz’s 89th-minute penalty rescued Arsenal a 1-1 draw away at Bayer 04 Leverkusen in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League last-16 tie on Wednesday.

The Premier League leaders, who had won all eight of their group-stage games, fell behind shortly after half-time when Robert Andrich capitalized on a Leverkusen corner to head the hosts into the lead.

Arsenal struggled to find fluency in attack, with their set-piece routines largely ineffective despite several promising free-kicks. However, they were given a lifeline late in the game when Noni Madueke was brought down in the box, allowing substitute Havertz to step up against his former club.

The hosts struck immediately after the break. Martin Terrier forced an excellent fingertip save from David Raya following a Grimaldo cross, and from the resulting corner, Grimaldo delivered the ball to Andrich at the far post, who headed it in with ease.

After conceding, Leverkusen manager Kasper Hjulmand, who had earlier questioned Arsenal’s dead-ball tactics, clashed briefly with the Gunners’ set-piece coach Nicolas Jover.

Arsenal finally earned a corner on the hour mark, prompting loud cheers from the 2,100 travelling fans. Frustration grew for the visitors until substitute Malik Tillman won the penalty for the decisive moment, allowing Havertz to quietly celebrate against his first professional club.
