A fire outbreak has destroyed a female students’ hostel at the College of Health Technology in Jahun, Jigawa State, leaving dozens of students affected.
The incident, which occurred on April 7, 2026, was reportedly caused by a cooking gas cylinder. The fire razed the building and consumed the personal belongings of about 52 students residing in the hostel.
While the exact cause is still under review, preliminary findings suggest that the fire may have started from a gas leak or mishandling of the cooking cylinder, which led to a sudden ignition. Sources at the scene indicated that the flame quickly spread through the hostel due to the presence of flammable materials.
However, concerns have been raised about safety compliance and supervision, especially if such appliances were being used in enclosed residential spaces.
