A 64-year-old cleric of the Celestial Church of Christ has reportedly been beaten to death after unidentified hoodlums stormed his parish during a church service in Abuja.
The deceased, Ven. Sup. Evang. Onaduja Oluwafemi Gbeminiyi, was the Shepherd-in-Charge of the Celestial Church of Christ, Castle of Mercy Parish, located in the Waru District of the Federal Capital Territory.
The incident reportedly occurred on Wednesday, August 19, during a mercy service attended by worshippers.
According to reports, the attackers entered the church premises and allegedly proceeded directly to the cleric’s apartment within the compound. They were said to have forcibly dragged him outside, leading to a struggle.
Gbeminiyi, a retired soldier, reportedly resisted the assailants for several minutes but was eventually overpowered and severely beaten.
He was said to have called for help during the attack, while the hoodlums later fled the area.
Neighbours and other residents reportedly rushed the injured cleric to a hospital, where he was confirmed dead a few hours later.

The matter was subsequently reported to the FCT Police Command, which has reportedly commenced an investigation to establish the circumstances surrounding the killing and identify those responsible.
Reports also indicated that the church’s assistant shepherd was invited by police for questioning and detained as part of the investigation.
The late cleric was later buried at Gudu Cemetery in Abuja, while a service of songs was held in his honour at the church premises.
