The Jigawa State Police Command has prosecuted 27 motorists arrested for allegedly violating various road traffic regulations during its ongoing enforcement operation across the state.
The motorists were apprehended under Operation Velvet, an initiative by the police aimed at improving road safety, enforcing traffic laws and promoting discipline among road users.
According to the command’s Police Public Relations Officer, SP Shiisu Lawan Adam, the offences recorded included overloading, driving without valid driver’s licences and the use of unauthorised tinted permits, among other violations.
The affected vehicles were impounded during enforcement operations carried out at different locations across Jigawa State. The suspects were subsequently charged before the appropriate courts for prosecution.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Tijjani Murtala, said the exercise was not targeted at any particular individual or group but was designed to protect lives and property while ensuring motorists comply with existing road traffic regulations.

He urged motorists to always carry valid driver’s licences, avoid overloading their vehicles and ensure that their vehicles meet registration and roadworthiness requirements.
The police commissioner also cautioned motorists against using unauthorised tinted permits, stressing that road users must operate within the confines of the law.
The command said Operation Velvet would continue and be extended to major towns, highways, feeder roads and other strategic locations across the state.
The police further appealed to members of the public to cooperate with officers and other relevant agencies during the enforcement exercise, assuring law-abiding motorists that the operation was aimed at promoting safer roads across Jigawa State.
