The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has arrested a 23-year-old man, identified as Mfon Essien, for allegedly being in possession of a loaded locally made shotgun in Ikot Ekpene Local Government Area of the state.
Essien, who reportedly resides in Ikot Inyang Itak Village, Ikono Local Government Area, was intercepted at about 12:30 p.m. on Sunday, September 6, 2026, along Ayah Road, off Uyo Road, Ikot Ekpene.
According to the Police, the arrest followed credible intelligence received by the Command.
A search conducted on the suspect reportedly led to the recovery of a locally made shotgun loaded with one live cartridge. The weapon was allegedly concealed in his clothing.
The suspect was taken into police custody, while the firearm and ammunition were recovered as exhibits.
The Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Timfon John, said an investigation had commenced to establish how Essien obtained the firearm, his intended purpose for carrying it and whether he had any connection with criminal networks involved in the movement or use of illegal weapons.
Commissioner of Police in Akwa Ibom State, CP Baba Mohammed Azare, said the Command would continue to intensify intelligence-led operations and other lawful strategies aimed at removing illegal firearms from the streets.

Azare urged residents to remain vigilant and provide the Police with credible information about suspicious individuals, illegal weapons and other criminal activities.
He also assured members of the public that the identities of informants would be treated with confidentiality.
DSP John said the arrest demonstrated the importance of intelligence gathering and cooperation between residents and security agencies in preventing violent crimes.
