Bosnia took the lead in the 21st minute through Jovo Lukić and appeared on course for victory before Canadian substitute Cyle Larin rescued a point for the hosts with an equalizer in the 78th minute.
The result marked a significant milestone for Canada, ending their six-match losing streak at the FIFA World Cup and securing their first-ever point in the tournament.
The expanded 48-team competition continues on Saturday with Qatar taking on Switzerland, while Brazil will face Morocco later in the day as the race for World Cup glory gathers momentum.
