At least 18 people have been killed while 22 others sustained injuries in a fatal road crash involving a heavy-duty truck in Niger State.
The accident occurred on Wednesday morning at Wuya village along the Bida-Mokwa Road in Gbako Local Government Area of the state.
The truck, which was reportedly loaded with goods and carrying 42 passengers, crashed into a bridge at a sharp bend after the driver allegedly lost control of the vehicle.
Niger State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Aishatu Sa’adu, confirmed the incident.
She said the passengers comprised one female and 41 males. The female passenger and 17 male passengers died at the scene, while 22 male passengers sustained varying degrees of injuries.
Two other passengers were rescued without injuries.
The deceased were subsequently deposited at a hospital mortuary, while the injured victims were taken to the Federal Medical Centre, Bida, where they are receiving medical treatment.

The FRSC Sector Commander attributed the crash to fatigue, warning motorists against driving when tired or sleepy.
She urged drivers, particularly those embarking on long-distance journeys, to get adequate rest and avoid any condition that could impair their concentration or ability to control their vehicles.
The incident has once again raised concerns about road safety and the need for motorists to exercise greater caution, particularly on dangerous bends and other accident-prone sections of major highways.
