
The Benue State Police Command has arrested 17 people in connection with an alleged mob attack on police officers in Adagio, Jato-Aka, Kwande Local Government Area of the state.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Cletus Nwandiogu, disclosed this during a media briefing in Makurdi.
According to him, the incident occurred on August 30, 2026, after a vehicle travelling from Taraba State reportedly hit a young boy in the community.
The police officers in the vehicle reportedly stopped to assist the injured boy and take him to a hospital. However, an angry mob allegedly confronted them, with some members attacking the officers with machetes.

The commissioner said the Divisional Police Officer in Jato-Aka sustained injuries, while another officer was severely beaten and initially believed to have died.
He added that the injured officer is still alive and receiving treatment in an undisclosed hospital in Anambra State.
CP Nwandiogu said the 17 suspects are currently being held at the State Command and will be arraigned as investigations continue.
He urged residents to avoid taking the law into their own hands and advised motorists and passengers to avoid late-night journeys where possible due to security concerns.
