At least 22 people are feared dead after suspected terrorists ambushed traders travelling under Nigerian Army escort to a weekly market in Zamfara State.
The attack occurred in the early hours of Sunday, October 11, along the road linking Gurusu and Gwashi communities in Bukkuyum Local Government Area, where the traders were heading to Nasarawa Market.
Residents said the assault claimed several lives, including security personnel assigned to escort the traders, while others sustained injuries and were rushed to Bukkuyum General Hospital for treatment.

Journalist Malik Samuel reported that the casualties included four soldiers, three police officers, one civil defence personnel and 19 civilians, although the figures differ from the initial report of at least 22 deaths.
The incident has heightened concerns over persistent insecurity in Zamfara State, where repeated attacks by suspected bandits continue to threaten lives, disrupt economic activities and undermine the safety of rural communities.
The Nigerian Army and Zamfara State Police Command had yet to officially comment on the incident at the time of the report.
