England manager Thomas Tuchel has come under renewed criticism following his side’s 2-1 defeat to Argentina in the semi-finals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The Three Lions made a bright start and took the lead, but Argentina mounted an impressive comeback to score twice and secure a place in the final.
Former Chelsea striker Chris Sutton was among the first to question Tuchel’s tactical decisions, arguing that the German coach invited unnecessary pressure after England went ahead.

Speaking after the match, Sutton said England became too defensive and allowed Argentina to dominate possession and dictate the tempo during the closing stages.
He maintained that attempting to protect a slim lead against a team of Argentina’s quality for such a long period was a costly mistake. According to Sutton, Tuchel’s substitutions and tactical adjustments shifted momentum in favour of the South Americans.
The football pundit described England’s approach after taking the lead as a major coaching error, insisting that the manager should accept responsibility for the defeat.
Sutton also questioned whether Tuchel is the right man to lead England forward, suggesting that the team’s cautious tactics ultimately cost them a place in the World Cup final.
The result ended England’s hopes of lifting the trophy, while Argentina advanced to the final after producing another resilient comeback performance. Tuchel and his players will now turn their attention to the third-place playoff as scrutiny over the manager’s decisions continues to grow.
