Argentina captain Lionel Messi has responded to allegations that FIFA has favoured his team during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, insisting the reigning champions have earned every success through hard work rather than preferential treatment.
The accusations resurfaced after Argentina secured a 2-1 victory over England in the semi-finals on Wednesday. Messi was instrumental in the win, setting up both goals as Enzo Fernández and Lautaro Martínez found the net to send La Albiceleste into a second consecutive World Cup final.

Before the clash with England, critics had questioned several refereeing decisions involving Argentina throughout the tournament. Egypt and Switzerland were among the teams reported to have lodged complaints with FIFA, claiming officiating decisions during their knockout defeats unfairly favoured the South American side.
Speaking after the semi-final triumph, Messi dismissed the claims, saying Argentina’s achievements were the result of commitment and teamwork rather than outside assistance.
The veteran forward said the squad had once again proved its quality by reaching another World Cup final, adding that critics could continue to question the team, but their performances on the pitch spoke for themselves.
Messi also stressed that winning the World Cup previously was no coincidence, arguing that Argentina have consistently demonstrated why they remain among the best teams in world football.
Argentina will now face Spain in Sunday’s World Cup final as they aim to successfully defend their title, while England will take on France in the third-place playoff.
