Former Scotland international Ally McCoist has ranked England as the third-best team remaining at the ongoing 2026 FIFA World Cup, as anticipation builds for their semi-final showdown against Argentina.
Speaking on The Rest is Football podcast, McCoist placed England behind tournament favorites France, whom he considers the strongest side so far.
However, he expressed confidence in England’s chances against Argentina, insisting the Three Lions have the edge heading into the crucial fixture.
“At this moment, England are the third-best team left in the tournament,” McCoist stated. “But the good news is they are up against a team I believe they are better than. England are stronger than Argentina.”

He acknowledged France’s dominance but urged England to remain focused on the task at hand rather than looking too far ahead.
“France look like the best team in the competition, but England must concentrate on the semi-final,” he added.
McCoist also highlighted Argentina’s vulnerabilities, particularly in defense, while cautioning against underestimating their attacking threat.
“Defensively, Argentina aren’t the strongest, but going forward, we know Lionel Messi can produce something special out of nothing. That’s the danger England must guard against,” he said.
With both teams eyeing a place in the final, the highly anticipated encounter promises to be a thrilling contest between two football powerhouses.
