The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has reportedly approved the allocation of approximately 291.01 hectares of land in Giri, Abuja, to eight companies, including a firm that received over 113 hectares.
Documents obtained by SaharaReporters showed that the allocations covered 10 plots in Cadastral Zone E01, Giri, with beneficiaries including oil and gas companies, property developers, commercial organisations and an educational foundation.
GI Properties Limited emerged as the largest beneficiary, receiving approximately 113.19 hectares under an offer dated September 29, 2026.

Unicorn Oil and Gas Limited received two plots measuring 28.30 hectares and 12.04 hectares, bringing its total allocation to 40.34 hectares.
Other beneficiaries include International Energy Centre Limited, which received 20 hectares, and Adorable Foundation for Educational Development, allocated 30.57 hectares for a proposed college or university project.
Alphaseal Business Limited received two commercial plots measuring 4.10 hectares and 4.47 hectares, designated for a shopping complex and petrol filling station respectively.
Salmond Wave Limited was allocated 73.22 hectares, while Linchpin Psychological Services Limited and Total Geospatial Integrated Services Limited received 2.54 hectares and 2.58 hectares respectively.
The allocations have generated concerns over the distribution of land reportedly belonging to the University of Abuja, particularly as ordinary Nigerians struggle to obtain smaller residential plots.
A source familiar with the development questioned why private companies were receiving large portions of land while individuals seeking between 250 and 500 square metres faced difficulties.
According to the documents, most beneficiaries were charged a premium of N500 per square metre and annual rent of N15 per square metre.
However, Adorable Foundation for Educational Development received a lower premium of N100 per square metre and annual rent of N2 per square metre.
The documents provide for 99-year lease terms, with rent reviews every five years. They also require beneficiaries to complete payments within 21 days of receiving their respective offers.
The beneficiaries are expected to develop their properties within two years after the commencement of their rights of occupancy and comply with approved building plans and land-use regulations.
The conditions also prohibit the companies from selling, transferring, subleasing or otherwise disposing of the allocated properties without the FCT Minister’s approval.
Meanwhile, Lere Olayinka, media aide to Wike, defended the allocations, insisting that the minister has constitutional powers to allocate, revoke and reallocate land in the FCT.
Olayinka questioned the controversy surrounding the allocations, arguing that the University of Abuja occupied more than 11,000 hectares of land.
He also recalled that the minister had earlier informed the public about plans to revoke some of the land allocated to the university.
The minister’s aide dismissed the criticism as emotional and sensational, maintaining that Wike was exercising his official responsibilities.
