A student of Osun State University (UNIOSUN), Salami Michael, has alleged that he was unlawfully arrested, assaulted and extorted of N600,000 by a police officer in Lagos State.
The allegation was contained in a petition filed by the Committee for the Defence of Human Rights (CDHR), Ikorodu North Unit II, before the Nigeria Police Force.
According to the petition, Michael was travelling with his father through the Ewu-Agbo area of Gberigbe, Ikorodu, when a police officer identified as Iku-Kenny allegedly stopped and accused him of being a thief and a “Yahoo boy.”
CDHR alleged that the student was handcuffed and taken to a police station, where his phone was reportedly seized. The group further claimed that Michael was forced to provide his phone password, after which the officer allegedly accessed private information on the device.
The rights organisation also alleged that Michael was assaulted and injured during the incident.
The petition claimed that the officer initially demanded N10 million for his release but later agreed to N600,000 following negotiations with the family. The money was allegedly paid in cash before Michael was released.

However, CDHR alleged that although the SIM card was returned to Michael, the officer allegedly retained his mobile phone.
The group further claimed that Michael was later arrested again at Okuku Police Division in Osun State over allegations linked to information reportedly found on his phone.
CDHR described the alleged actions as violations of Michael’s fundamental rights and called for an immediate and impartial investigation.
The organisation is demanding the return of the student’s phone, refund of the alleged N600,000 payment, appropriate disciplinary action if the allegations are established, and protection for Michael and his family from further harassment.
The Lagos State Police Command had not responded to requests for comments on the allegations at the time of the report.
