Two young men contracted to evacuate sewage from a three-storey building in Aba, Abia State, have died after falling into an underground sewage pit.
The incident occurred around midnight on Sunday at a building located at No. 10 Powerline, off Omuma Road, Aba.
The victims were reportedly hired by tenants of the building to evacuate the sewage. They arrived at the compound with a ladder and buckets and began the evacuation process.
However, tragedy struck when the ladder they were using reportedly broke into two, causing the two workers to fall back into the sewage pit. They subsequently died inside the underground pit.

Following the incident, officials of the Abia State Environmental Protection Agency, Aba Zone, sealed the three-storey building to allow investigations into the circumstances surrounding the deaths.
The Deputy General Manager of ASEPA, Aba Zone, Okezie Ezengwa, confirmed the incident and expressed sadness over the deaths.
Ezengwa blamed the incident on carelessness and unsafe environmental practices, warning against the manual evacuation of sewage.
He said approved vendors were available to carry out such operations safely and questioned the use of ladders and buckets to enter underground sewage pits.
The bodies of the deceased were later recovered and taken to a mortuary, while the building remained sealed as investigations continued.
