A professional truck driver who was abducted in Ogun State has regained his freedom after operatives of the state Police Command killed two suspected kidnappers during a rescue operation.
The driver was reportedly kidnapped at about 11:10 p.m. on August 25 in the Ajibawo area of Ibese, Ogun State.
The Deputy Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Oluborode Opeyemi, said the command’s Anti-Kidnapping Unit immediately launched an intelligence-led operation after receiving information about the incident.
Acting on intelligence, the police traced the suspected kidnappers to their hideout along the Papalanto-Ilaro Road, where an operation was carried out.
Two suspected members of the kidnapping gang were killed during the operation, while other members escaped with gunshot injuries, according to the police.
A search of the hideout led to the recovery of two AK-47 rifles, 25 rounds of live 5.6mm ammunition, two mobile phones and N2 million cash suspected to be proceeds of criminal activities.
The bodies of the two suspects were taken to a morgue for autopsy, while efforts are ongoing to arrest the fleeing gang members.
The Ogun State Commissioner of Police, Bode Ojajuni, commended the Anti-Kidnapping Unit for its courage and professionalism.
Ojajuni said the command would continue to use intelligence-driven operations to tackle kidnapping and other violent crimes across the state.
He also urged residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities, especially information about people seeking treatment for gunshot wounds, to assist the police in tracking down the fleeing suspects.
