Nigerian troops under Operation HADIN KAI have killed several Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) fighters, including high-ranking commanders, after repelling a major terrorist assault on their positions in Kukawa Local Government Area of Borno State.
The military disclosed that the encounter took place on October 31, 2026, involving ground troops supported by the operation’s air component.
Among those killed were Abu Hajara, a senior member of ISWAP’s Shura Council; Abul Walid, a prominent commander and close associate of the group’s overall leader, Ba Shuwa; and two high-ranking Arab fighters. Several other terrorists were also neutralised during the operation.
According to a statement issued by Captain Mohammed Goni, Acting Media Information Officer of the Joint Task Force (North East), troops recovered several weapons, ammunition and communication devices following the encounter.
The operation comes barely three days after another military engagement in Buni Yadi, where troops reportedly neutralised 55 terrorists, including several identified commanders.

Those killed in the Buni Yadi operation were identified as Ali Mandara Abba Gajiri, also known as Munzir; Habu Ikkima Nakif Yana Faruk; and Commander Gogore.
The Theatre Command described the successful defence of its positions as evidence of the troops’ combat readiness, vigilance and superior firepower.
It reaffirmed its commitment to protecting civilians and sustaining military operations aimed at dismantling terrorist networks and destroying their camps across the North-East.
The latest operation represents another major offensive against ISWAP, which continues to pose a significant security threat in Nigeria’s North-East, particularly around the Lake Chad Basin.
