
Troops of the Nigerian Army have freed Mrs Amina Abubakar, wife of the late Major General Rabe Abubakar, weeks after bandits kidnapped the couple in Katsina State.
The Defence Headquarters confirmed the rescue on Monday, June 15, 2026. The operation was carried out by troops of Operation FASAN YAMMA with support from the Nigerian Air Force.
According to Director Defence Information, Major General Samaila Uba, soldiers made contact with the kidnappers at Tunga Village during sustained offensives against criminal elements.
The bandits shot Mrs Abubakar before abandoning her and fleeing due to pressure from advancing troops. She was immediately evacuated to a military hospital where she is currently receiving treatment and responding well.
The Armed Forces said it remains committed to ensuring her full recovery and providing support to her family during this period. Military authorities also vowed to sustain operations to track down those responsible for the abduction and other crimes in Katsina and across the country.
Late Major General Abubakar, a former Director of Defence Information, died in captivity after he and his wife were abducted. The rescue of his wife brings relief to the family as troops continue their fight against banditry and terrorism in the North West.
