
A tragic incident has been reported in Ukum Local Government Area of Benue State, where a middle-aged woman allegedly set fire to a residence, resulting in the death of two young girls.
The suspect, identified as Mbayegh, is said to have committed the act in the early hours of Monday, July 6, 2026, in the Kaffe area of Zaki-Biam.
According to community sources, the woman had visited the home of her alleged lover, Aondoyima Ierkwagh, but was asked to leave after he reportedly refused her request to stay. The situation escalated after she declined to leave the premises.
It was gathered that tensions may have arisen from suspicions that another woman was present in the household. In the midst of the disagreement, the suspect allegedly set fire to a hut within the compound where the man’s two daughters were asleep.

Neighbours reportedly attempted to rescue the children and rushed them to a nearby hospital. However, they later succumbed to their injuries while receiving treatment.
Confirming the incident, the Benue State Police Command spokesperson stated that the case was reported by the children’s father.
A suspect has since been arrested, and investigations are ongoing to determine the full circumstances surrounding the tragedy.
Authorities have assured the public that justice will be pursued as efforts continue to uncover all details related to the incident.
