Three transmission towers have collapsed in Kebbi State following heavy rainfall and a windstorm, disrupting electricity transmission from Nigeria to Niamey, the capital of Niger Republic.
The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) disclosed this in a statement on Friday, August 28, 2026, saying it had declared a force majeure on the 132kV Birnin Kebbi–Niamey transmission line.
According to TCN, the line tripped at about 5:38 p.m. on Wednesday, August 26. Operators attempted to restore the line through a trial reclosure at 6:03 p.m., but the line tripped again immediately.
Following the failed restoration attempt, TCN deployed its linesmen to inspect the transmission route and identify the cause of the fault.
The inspection revealed that three towers, identified as T109, T110 and T111, had collapsed at Chibike Village in Kebbi State.
TCN attributed the incident to severe weather conditions, particularly heavy rainfall and strong winds in the area.

The company said the affected transmission line is a major link for bulk electricity supply from Nigeria to Niamey, resulting in an interruption of power transmission to parts of Niger Republic.
TCN said it had notified its customers in Niamey about the disruption and mobilised personnel and equipment to the affected location.
The company added that efforts were underway to reconstruct the damaged towers and restore the transmission line as quickly as possible.
TCN apologised for the inconvenience caused by the incident and assured customers that it was working to return normal electricity supply to the affected area.
