
At least 17 police officers have been confirmed dead following a deadly terrorist attack on a military training facility in Buni Yadi, located in Gujba Local Government Area of Yobe State.
The tragic incident occurred in the early hours of May 8, 2026, at the Nigerian Army Special Forces School, where the officers were undergoing advanced counter-terrorism and tactical training.
According to an official statement released by the Nigeria Police Force spokesperson, Deputy Commissioner of Police Anthony Placid, the attackers launched a well-coordinated assault at approximately 1:15 a.m., striking the facility from multiple directions.
The attack resulted in heavy casualties, including several Nigerian Army personnel who were reportedly killed while attempting to repel the insurgents.
Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, described the fallen officers as courageous and dedicated personnel who paid the ultimate price in service to the nation.

He extended heartfelt condolences to their families, assuring them that their sacrifices would not be forgotten.
In response to the attack, the Commissioner of Police in Yobe State, Usman Jibrin, visited the scene to commiserate with military authorities and surviving officers.
He encouraged those still in training to remain steadfast and complete their programme in honour of their fallen colleagues.
Security agencies have since intensified efforts to track down and apprehend those responsible, with ongoing collaboration between the police, military, and other relevant forces.
The Nigeria Police Force also confirmed that the deceased officers will be duly honoured for their bravery and service to the country.
