A suspected member of the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), trained as a gunboat operator, has surrendered to troops of the Nigerian Army in Damasak, Mobbar Local Government Area of Borno State.
Security sources revealed that the individual turned himself in to personnel of the 5 Brigade on Wednesday morning at approximately 9:00 a.m.
According to preliminary findings, the suspect fled from an ISWAP-controlled camp located in Barra Village within the Lake Chad region, an area reportedly under the command of a senior insurgent leader identified as Abu Ubeida.

During initial debriefing, the surrendered fighter disclosed that he had been trained in operating gunboats and was also responsible for handling a Dushka heavy machine gun during terrorist operations around the Lake Chad axis.
He attributed his decision to abandon the group to sustained military airstrikes targeting insurgent hideouts, which he said had significantly disrupted ISWAP’s activities and survival capacity.
Following his surrender, the suspect was placed under quarantine in line with standard military procedures. He has also received food and medical care.
Sources confirmed that he remains in military custody, where he is currently undergoing profiling, intelligence debriefing, and other administrative processes as part of ongoing counterterrorism operations.
