
Former Super Eagles defender Shehu Abdullahi has officially ended his professional football career as he shifts focus to politics, with plans to contest in Nigeria’s 2027 general elections.
The 33-year-old is eyeing a seat in the House of Representatives, where he intends to represent Sokoto North/Sokoto South Federal Constituency under the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Abdullahi’s retirement brings to a close a notable football journey that saw him rise through Nigeria’s youth ranks before becoming a regular figure in the senior national team.
Between 2014 and 2019, he earned 37 caps for the Super Eagles, establishing himself as a reliable presence in defence.

At club level, he enjoyed spells across Europe, featuring for sides such as Anorthosis Famagusta FC, Bursaspor, AC Omonia and Levski Sofia.
He later returned to Nigeria in 2024, rejoining Kano Pillars in the Nigeria Premier Football League.
His move into politics gained momentum following his appointment as Special Assistant to the Sokoto State Commissioner for Sports and Youth Development, a role that exposed him to governance and public service.
Confirmation of his decision to quit football came from former teammate Ahmed Garba, who revealed that Abdullahi has relocated to Sokoto State and is now fully committed to his political ambition.
Abdullahi’s transition reflects a growing trend of athletes venturing into politics, leveraging their public image and leadership experience.
His candidacy is expected to attract significant interest, particularly among young voters and football fans, as he seeks to make an impact beyond the pitch.
