
A violent rainstorm accompanied by strong winds has devastated Tom Gangare community in Sopp Ward of Riyom Local Government Area, Plateau State, destroying more than 100 houses and displacing several families.
The incident, which occurred on Sunday evening following a heavy downpour, also damaged critical infrastructure including health facilities, places of worship, and residential buildings.
The storm left widespread destruction across the community as uprooted trees reportedly collapsed onto homes, worsening the impact.
Although no fatalities were recorded, residents have been left in distress, with many families now homeless and struggling to access food, shelter, and other basic necessities.
Community members described the disaster as overwhelming, noting that property worth millions of naira was lost. A resident, Bot Felix, said the scale of destruction had pushed many households into urgent need of humanitarian support.

Another stakeholder, Dung Danboyi, appealed to the government and relevant agencies to intervene quickly, stressing that affected families are currently exposed to severe hardship.
He called on the Plateau State Government, the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), and humanitarian partners to provide immediate relief materials.
The Chairman of Riyom Local Government Council, Sati Bature Shuwa, visited the affected community to assess the situation and sympathize with victims.
He assured residents that a detailed assessment would be conducted to guide relief efforts and coordinated intervention.
Local authorities and community leaders continue to urge urgent humanitarian assistance as displaced families struggle to recover from the destruction.
