47 Arrested With Weapons During Bauchi Bye-Election -

The Bauchi State Police Command has arrested 47 people allegedly found with guns, cutlasses and sticks during the bye-election in the Disina State Constituency of Shira Local Government Area.

According to the police, the suspects were arrested at different polling units while allegedly posing as members of a state-owned security outfit.

The Police Public Relations Officer, Nafiu Habib, said the suspects were taken into custody and the weapons recovered from them. He added that they would be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for further investigation.

The police said the suspects were allegedly acting in violation of the Electoral Act and security directives issued ahead of the election.

The Commissioner of Police, Sani-Omolori Aliyu, condemned the incident and warned that anyone attempting to disrupt the electoral process or cause a breach of peace would face legal action.

Meanwhile, the Independent National Electoral Commission reported that the bye-election in Gombe/Kwami/Funakaye Federal Constituency was peaceful, although officials observed low voter turnout in some polling units.

The election was held to fill the vacant seat previously occupied by Yaya Tongo, who died in June 2026.
