Residents across Yola, Jimeta, and nearby communities in Adamawa State are raising serious concerns over the growing activities of suspected street gangs popularly known as “Shilla Boys,” as insecurity continues to escalate in parts of the state capital.
The alleged involvement of these groups in violent crimes, harassment, and public disturbances has heightened fear among residents, forcing many business owners and commuters to limit movement, especially at night.
In response to the growing tension, the Adamawa State Police Command has intensified security measures aimed at restoring calm and boosting public confidence.
This follows widespread reports particularly on social media highlighting increased cases of robbery, intimidation, and gang-related violence in Yola North and Yola South Local Government Areas.
Community leaders and residents have repeatedly called for stronger security presence in identified hotspots, noting that the situation is becoming increasingly alarming.
Security experts attribute the rise of such gangs, commonly referred to as “Shilla” in some northern cities, to factors including unemployment, drug abuse, peer pressure, and weakened community structures.

These groups are often linked to street violence, phone snatching, and clashes with rival factions.
To address the threat, the police command has deployed the Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU) alongside other tactical teams to carry out intelligence-driven raids on suspected criminal hideouts.
Authorities are also strengthening community policing efforts to enhance information gathering.
Police spokesperson Suleiman Nguroje assured residents that the situation is being taken seriously, revealing that the Commissioner of Police, Kabir Hassan, has ordered intensified day and night patrols, stop-and-search operations, and increased surveillance in vulnerable areas.
According to the command, Area Commanders and Divisional Police Officers have also been directed to boost visibility policing and strengthen intelligence networks to track down and apprehend those responsible.
The police further urged residents to remain vigilant, avoid spreading unverified information, and support ongoing operations by providing credible intelligence, emphasizing that community cooperation is key to tackling the menace.
