A police inspector has been killed after suspected armed herdsmen attacked a security checkpoint in Ayilamo, Logo Local Government Area of Benue State.
The attack reportedly prompted troops of Operation WHIRL STROKE (OPWS), working alongside a mobile police team, to respond to the incident.
According to security sources, the attackers fled into nearby bushes after sighting the approaching troops.
The security personnel subsequently launched a follow-up operation around the area to track the fleeing suspects and restore calm.
During the operation, troops recovered the body of the slain police inspector.
His remains were taken to the mortuary at Ayilamo Hospital for autopsy and other necessary procedures.
The incident has raised fresh concerns over the security situation in parts of Logo Local Government Area, where rural communities and security personnel remain vulnerable to attacks.

The military said patrols and surveillance had been intensified around Uzer, Ayilamo and other border areas of the local government.
Security personnel are also continuing efforts to identify and apprehend those responsible for the attack.
Residents have been urged to remain calm and provide relevant information to security agencies that could assist in the ongoing operation.
The spokesperson of the Benue State Police Command, DSP Orchia Aondogwu, could not be reached for confirmation as calls to his mobile phones went unanswered as of press time.
