The Yobe State Police Command has arrested several suspects during separate operations targeting alleged extortion, drug-related offences and theft across the state.
The command’s Public Relations Officer, ASP Yusuf Adamu Aliyu, disclosed this in a statement issued on behalf of the Commissioner of Police, Usman Kanfani Jibrin.
According to the police, the arrests followed intelligence-led operations, joint security efforts and sustained patrols aimed at tackling criminal activities and improving public safety.
One of the cases was reported by a resident of Baimari, Goni Abdullahi, who allegedly received threatening telephone calls and was forced to pay N130,000 to suspected criminals.
Following an investigation, police operatives arrested a 32-year-old suspect, Auwal Mallam Ari, from Goneri Hamlet in Yunusari Local Government Area.
The police alleged that the suspect confessed during interrogation and provided information about other members of the suspected syndicate. Investigators also alleged that the group had previously extorted N500,000 from another resident.
One suspect, identified as Audu Baimari, was named as the alleged leader of the group and is still at large, while efforts are ongoing to locate and arrest him.
Police said a mobile phone, SIM card and N630,000 suspected to be proceeds of crime were recovered during the operation.

In another operation, security operatives, working alongside other agencies and vigilante groups, conducted a night raid on suspected criminal hideouts in Damaturu.
The raid led to the arrest of 32 persons suspected of involvement in various criminal activities.
The command said investigations were continuing and that suspects found culpable would be charged to court. It also reaffirmed its commitment to intelligence-driven policing and efforts to rid Yobe State of criminal elements.
