Police investigations further revealed that Umar allegedly collected ₦4,000 from two households, claiming the money was needed to conduct prayers and sacrifices that would prevent the supposed attack.
The incident was reported to the Darazo Divisional Police Headquarters on June 28, 2026, prompting officers to launch an investigation that led to the suspect’s arrest.
During questioning, Umar reportedly admitted that the information he circulated was false. He explained that he acted after hearing from a 32-year-old woman in the community, identified as Hannatu, who claimed she had dreamt that Lanzai could come under attack.
According to police, Hannatu’s fears were influenced by trauma following the killing of three of her neighbours during a violent incident in the area on June 4, 2026.
The Bauchi State Police Command said the suspect remains in custody at the Darazo Divisional Police Headquarters, while the case will be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for further investigation and possible prosecution.
Reacting to the development, the Commissioner of Police, CP Sani-Omolori Aliyu, cautioned members of the public against spreading unverified information capable of causing panic and disrupting public peace.
He urged residents to verify sensitive information through appropriate authorities and promptly report suspicious activities to security agencies instead of taking matters into their own hands.
The commissioner also reassured residents that Lanzai and surrounding communities remain calm, adding that security agencies are closely monitoring the area to ensure the safety of lives and property.
