The Jigawa State Police Command has arrested 17 motorists for allegedly violating various road traffic regulations during the commencement of a special enforcement exercise known as Operation Velvet.
The operation commenced on Monday in Dutse Local Government Area as part of efforts by the command to improve road safety, reduce traffic-related offences and prevent avoidable accidents across the state.
The command’s spokesperson, SP Lawan Shiisu Adam, disclosed the arrests in a statement issued to journalists.
According to him, the affected motorists were intercepted for offences including the use of covered number plates, unauthorised use of tinted glass and overloading.
The police said the suspects were subsequently taken before the appropriate court for prosecution in line with existing laws.
The command clarified that Operation Velvet was not intended to harass or inconvenience law-abiding motorists, but to promote responsible driving and ensure strict compliance with traffic regulations.

The exercise, according to the police, will be extended to major towns and cities across Jigawa State, with motorists warned that those caught violating traffic laws will face the full consequences of the law.
The Commissioner of Police, Jigawa State Command, CP Tijjani Murtala, urged motorists, commercial drivers, tricycle and motorcycle operators, as well as other road users, to obey traffic regulations and avoid reckless or dangerous driving practices.
He also appealed to members of the public to provide the police with credible information about persistent traffic violations capable of putting lives and property at risk.
