A community youth group in Mangu Local Government Area of Plateau State has called for an independent investigation into the alleged killing of its leader, Fwangshak Dawuk, during an encounter involving security personnel.
Dawuk, who was the Secretary of the Mwaghavul Youth Movement in Mangu Halle District, was reportedly killed on Sunday at Jakatai while carrying out community vigilance duties.
According to the group, the incident occurred after an attack was reported in Lawuru, a neighbouring community in Barkin Ladi Local Government Area. Following the attack, youths in Jakatai reportedly mobilised to monitor developments and prevent possible violence from spreading into their community.
The Mwaghavul Youth Movement alleged that a military convoy responding to the situation opened fire during a confrontation, resulting in Dawuk’s death.
The group said witnesses also raised concerns over events that allegedly followed the shooting. It claimed that soldiers took Dawuk to Barkin Ladi General Hospital, where he was reportedly presented as an emergency patient without immediately informing medical personnel that he had already died.

It wants investigators to establish what led to the confrontation, the circumstances surrounding the shooting, who authorised the use of firearms and why Dawuk was taken from the scene to the hospital.

The group also urged military authorities to preserve operational records connected to the deployment, including details of the personnel involved, command structure and relevant communication records.
The youths stressed that Dawuk’s death should not be treated as another casualty of the prolonged insecurity affecting Plateau State.
They called for accountability if the investigation establishes that any individual acted improperly, while urging authorities to ensure that the circumstances surrounding the youth leader’s death are fully established.
