A male passenger has died after a commercial Volkswagen bus crashed into a median pole at Ogunlana Junction, along the Ojuelegba axis of Surulere, Lagos.
The accident involved a Volkswagen commercial bus with registration number LND 130 XR. According to the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), the bus reportedly veered off its path and crashed into the median pole.
Preliminary reports indicated that the driver was allegedly under the influence of alcohol and had been driving recklessly before the crash.
Other motorists reportedly became cautious as they approached the bus after noticing its erratic movement.
During the incident, a male passenger apparently jumped out of the moving vehicle while trying to escape. He sustained serious injuries after hitting the ground and later died from the injuries.
LASTMA officials who were conducting traffic surveillance in the area quickly arrived at the scene. They secured the area, managed traffic and removed the damaged vehicle and deceased passenger from the road.

Police officers from the Area C Police Division, Ojuelegba, also secured the scene, while emergency officials evacuated the remains of the deceased.
LASTMA General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed condolences to the victim’s family and urged motorists to ensure their vehicles are properly maintained before embarking on journeys.
He specifically advised drivers to check their brakes, tyres, steering systems and other safety components regularly.
Bakare-Oki also warned about the dangers of reckless driving and driving under the influence of alcohol, while reaffirming LASTMA’s commitment to responding quickly to road crashes and keeping Lagos roads safe.
