The family of Michael Olugbade Oyedokun, a 57-year-old teacher allegedly killed by gunmen during a school abduction in Oyo State, has announced plans to hold a farewell service in his honour despite the failure to recover his remains.
Oyedokun, a Mathematics teacher and Vice-Principal of Community High School, Ahoro-Esinle, in Oriire Local Government Area, was abducted alongside pupils and other teachers when gunmen attacked three schools on May 15, 2026.
According to reports, he was killed on the second day of captivity, while other abducted victims were eventually rescued in July.
In a statement shared on social media, the family disclosed that the commendation and farewell service would take place on October 30, 2026, at 11 a.m. at Eliz Event Centre, behind the Federal Road Safety Corps office in the High School area of Ogbomoso, Oyo State.
The family said it had spent months hoping to recover his remains so he could receive a befitting burial. However, the prolonged wait had forced them to make the painful decision to honour his life without his body.

Describing the loss as devastating, the family said Oyedokun’s absence had left a deep void in the lives of his wife, two sons, siblings and other loved ones.
Following the rescue of the other abductees, the family had appealed to the Federal Government, President Bola Tinubu and Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde to intensify efforts to recover his remains.
The family said the farewell service would provide an opportunity to celebrate his life, acknowledge his contributions and preserve his memory despite the circumstances surrounding his death.
Oyedokun, who had risen to the position of vice-principal and had only a few years left before retirement, is remembered by his loved ones as a devoted husband, father, educator and family man.
His family continues to hope that his remains will eventually be recovered.
