Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen has expressed his disappointment over Nigeria’s failure to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, describing the setback as painful for both himself and his teammates.
The 2026 tournament, expanded to 48 teams for the first time in FIFA history, recently got underway, featuring nations from across the world. Despite Africa being allocated nine automatic qualification places and an additional playoff spot, Nigeria failed to secure a place at the global showpiece.
The Super Eagles’ qualification campaign ended in heartbreak after they finished second in their group and were subsequently eliminated by DR Congo in the continental playoffs. The result means Nigeria will miss a second consecutive World Cup, extending a frustrating period for one of Africa’s most successful football nations.
Speaking during a recent social media livestream, Osimhen admitted the disappointment remains difficult to accept.

“It’s painful, not just for me but for the entire team,” the Galatasaray forward said. “We’ve missed out on the World Cup twice in a row. Sometimes things happen in football and in life, and all we can do is keep moving forward.”
Nigeria last appeared at the FIFA World Cup in 2018, meaning several members of the current squad, including Osimhen, are yet to experience football’s biggest stage.
The 26-year-old, however, remains optimistic that the Super Eagles can learn from the setback and focus on future international competitions.
