
Tension has escalated along the Onitsha–Enugu Expressway following a renewed wave of armed robbery attacks, with one person reportedly losing their life in a recent incident along the Nawfia axis.
Motorists and residents in the area have expressed growing concern over what they describe as worsening insecurity on the busy highway, which serves as a major link in the South-East region.
The alarm was raised by a social media user who highlighted the persistent threat posed by criminal elements operating along the route. According to the source, residents of Nawfia community have repeatedly complained about frequent ambushes on unsuspecting travellers.
In an effort to curb the attacks, members of the community recently carried out a large-scale environmental sanitation exercise.
During the operation, thick vegetation was cleared and logs allegedly used by the robbers to block the road were removed.

Despite these proactive measures, the attackers have reportedly continued their operations with increased boldness, leaving commuters vulnerable.
The latest incident, said to have been captured in a video circulating online, reportedly resulted in one fatality, further intensifying fear among road users.
Residents and commuters have now called on the Anambra State Government and security agencies to take urgent and coordinated action.
They urged authorities to strengthen surveillance, deploy regular patrol teams, and dismantle suspected criminal hideouts along the expressway.
They emphasized that the Onitsha–Enugu Expressway remains one of the busiest highways in the region and should not be left exposed to criminal activities.
As of the time of this report, the Anambra State Police Command has yet to release an official statement regarding the incident.
