The management of the Federal Polytechnic, Oko, Anambra State, has debunked widespread reports claiming that students of the institution lost their lives in a recent building collapse.
In an official statement released on Monday, the institution described the reports as false, misleading, and lacking factual basis.
The Public Relations Officer, Dr. Oguegbu Celestine Udoka, clarified that the incident did not occur within the Polytechnic but in Amaokpala, a neighboring community in Orumba North Local Government Area.
According to the statement, the collapsed structure—a privately owned three-storey building reportedly known as the “5 Elite Storey Building”—was used as a lodge by both students and non-students. It is located near Tonimas Filling Station in Amaokpala.
The Polytechnic firmly stated that no student has been confirmed dead in the incident, contrary to claims circulating on social media. It also noted that the two individuals believed to still be trapped under the debris are not students of the institution.
Providing further context, the school management explained that the collapse occurred after students had concluded their second-semester examinations.
Many had already vacated their hostels and returned home for the ongoing break, significantly reducing student presence in the area at the time of the incident.

The Rector, Dr. Chioma Irene Awuzie, visited the scene early Monday morning alongside key officials, including the Students’ Union Government President, Comrade Anuluonye Ifechukwu Joseph, and other members of the institution’s management team.
They assessed the situation and ensured that no student of the Polytechnic was affected.
Government officials, including the Anambra State Commissioner for Works, Architect Okey Ezeobi, and the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Afam Ben Obidike, were also present at the site, coordinating rescue operations with emergency responders.
Several occupants were reportedly rescued from the rubble and taken to nearby hospitals, where they are receiving treatment for injuries described as non-life-threatening.
Rescue efforts are ongoing, with authorities working to locate and assist the remaining individuals believed to be trapped.
The Polytechnic urged the public to disregard unverified information and rely only on credible updates, reaffirming its commitment to the safety and welfare of its students.
It also commended emergency responders, security agencies, and volunteers for their swift response and dedication in handling the situation.
